Countering Islamist Radicalisation: A Comparative Study of Bulgaria and France's Practices, Experiences and Challenges
Nocheva, Nikolena Hristova ; Anceschi, Luca (advisor) ; Hynek, Nikola (referee) ; Biagini, Erika (referee)
This study aims to contribute to Islamist radicalisation and terrorism research in the EU context. It compares and assesses the counter-radicalisation policies that Bulgaria and France adopt. In addition, it seeks to evaluate whether effective practices can be incorporated and adopted in the respective countries. This study grounds its theoretical criticism within Lindekilde's theoretical framework for policy effectiveness. To analyse and better comprehend the main ingredients in the countries' counter-radicalisation model, this study relies on a hermeneutic methodology. The study uses Lindekilde's four evaluative criteria (time, policy design & logic, reception and implementation) to determine whether the existing counter radicalisation policies are well suited to their national contexts. The findings from this study indicate that Bulgaria and France share similar struggles with the implementation of their proposed measures. The study argues that both countries could improve their counter-radicalisation practices provided they introduce measures from a soft character. More precisely, the findings suggest that effective counter radicalisation policies are those which are tailored to the population's local needs and those which benefit from engaging with the richness of their societies. Comparison of Biology Textbooks used in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria with Special Attention to Parasitology
Glavanakovová, Marie ; Andreska, Jan (advisor) ; Hanel, Lubomír (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to compare Czech and Bulgarian Biology textbooks for primary and secondary schools with a special focus on parasitic organisms. The goal was to determine the differences in the processing of textbooks and whether the topic of parasitology is comprehended fundamentally different. The evaluation was performed as a qualitative analysis as the textbooks were scored according to pre-set criteria. Furthermore, in the quantitative part of the research, the occurrence of individual parasites in the examined textbooks was monitored. The analysis also focused on the comparison of educational systems and educational programs taking parasitic organisms into consideration. In my work, I came to the conclusion that both regions have modern textbooks with a high standard but in Bulgaria there is a better integration of health education in textbooks than in the Czech Republic. Last but not least, the work describes significant differences in secondary school curricula.
Selective adjustment to EU regulatory provisions in new member states : the case of electricity market liberalization in Bulgaria and Czech Republic
Neofitov, Alexander ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Cibulková, Petra (referee)
The present work aspires to provide a comprehensive analysis of the policy developments through which European-level prescriptions regarding the liberalization of national electricity markets have been accommodated within the domestic policy contexts of two new member states of the European Union: Bulgaria and Czech Republic. Despite being subjected to uniform demands, adaptation to community regulatory provisions in the two countries has prompted divergent patterns of policy change, resulting in full compliance in the Czech Republic and a failure to meet EU objectives in Bulgaria. In order to address the observed inconsistency the envisaged research identifies a causal link between the outcomes of regulatory compliance and the influence of utility regulation as a sector-specific EU governance pattern on the dynamics of resource re-distribution at the domestic level. A major concern of the research is how contextual factors, such as incumbent power balances across actor populations in the target policy area condition the impacts of EU inputs on domestic policy decisions. In this respect the work hypothesizes that due to transition "sediments" in the new EU member states external rules may be selectively applied in order to match the existing realities and lead to outcomes that diverge from the...

Kraevská, Markéta ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Hanzal, Jaromír (referee)
The diploma thesis The CEZ affair from the perspective of the Czech and Bulgarian press deals with the media portrayal of the unrests in Bulgaria in February and March 2013, which were caused by the high prices for electricity that had been supplied, among others, by the parastatal Czech company CEZ. This company became a symbol of the protests. The basis for the analysis and comparison consists of the Czech dailies Mladá fronta Dnes, Právo, Hospodářské noviny and the Bulgarian dailies Trud, 24 chasa and Standart. The reference period is February 2013, when the protests began and subsequently culminated at the end of the month. This work aims to describe how the whole affair was depicted in selected examples of Czech and Bulgarian press. Subsequently, these two approaches are compared. In addition to the analysis, the thesis also touches the topic of modern history of Bulgaria and an outline of Czech-Bulgarian relations. The individual periodicals used for the analysis, as well as the energetical concept of Bulgaria are introduced in order to achieve easier understanding of the entire problem.

Vojvodovo Sketches
Jakoubek, Marek ; Horský, Jan (advisor) ; Moravcová, Mirjam (referee) ; Penčev, Vladimir (referee)
The dissertation "Vojvodovo Sketches" thesis consists of an introduction and further of published texts related to Vojvodovo. Vojvodovo, a Czech village in north-western Bulgaria founded in 1900 by about twenty Czech evangelical families from the village of Svatá Helena in what is today the Romanian part of Banat, which they left because of religious disputes and a shortage of land. Although Bulgaria engaged in several armed conflicts in the first decades of the twentieth century, the village flourished economically and the population rose steadily during that period. Eventually, however, its economic prosperity, based almost exclusively on agriculture, was curtailed by a land shortage. As a result, some villagers emigrated to Argentina in 1928. By 1934/5 the village was again overcrowded and suffering serious land shortage. This time some of its inhabitants moved to the Turkish village of Belinci in north-eastern Bulgaria (Isperich region). The history of Czech settlement in Vojvodovo, as well as Belinci, effectively ends in 1949-1950, when the overwhelming majority of their Czech inhabitants left as a part of post-war migratory processes organized under inter-state agreements and resettled in several villages in the South Moravia region of the Czechoslovak Republic. Vojvodovans were renowned for their...
Roman and Late Antique Pottery from Ancient Thrace, Selected Assemblages from the Yambol District
Tušlová, Petra ; Pavúk, Peter (advisor) ; Hudson, Nicholas Frederick (referee) ; Karaöz, Billur Tekkök (referee)
Three pottery assemblages from the Yambol District were processed in this thesis to enrich our knowledge about the Roman and Late Antique pottery material in Ancient Thrace. The first, and most abundant assemblage, is from the Roman vicus called Yurta, which is located near the village of Stroyno and dated from the 1st /2nd c. AD till the Late Antiquity. This assemblage is substituted by different pottery classes which give us bases for identifying the variability of the pottery material and the different wares and fabrics in the area. In addition, it represents the main material for statistics and for a quantitative comparison of individual classes. The second assemblage includes 19 complete vessels from two burial mounds in Palauzovo, dated to the 2nd -3rd c. AD, and gives a comparative sample for the settlement contexts as well as a basis for studying the ways in which pottery was modified for special burial purposes. The last set of 57 vessels comes from a closed context dated to the end of the 6th c. AD, which was found in a collapsed house at the Dodoparon hillfort, rising above the village of Golyam Manastir. It represents a unique set of finds from the Late Antiquity, which is well dated and preserved. The three pottery assemblages are all different, each with a distinct character, which...
